“Winter Storm Battleground”: What the 2026–27 Forecast Means for Your Home

Forecasters have the Mid-South in the bullseye for ice this winter. What an ice storm actually does to a house, how to prep pipes and heat, and why generator installs book out before the storm — not after.

Several seasonal outlooks are calling for a rough winter across the Mid-South, and one meteorologist a lot of our customers follow has gone as far as calling the Tennessee Valley a potential “winter storm battleground” — more ice and snow than usual, with the storm track shifted south toward us. Long-range forecasts miss all the time, and we hope this one does. But the last few winters have taught Tipton County what a bad ice event looks like, so here is the honest version of what it does to a house and what is worth doing about it now, while the sky is blue.

What an ice storm actually does here

Snow is mostly a driving problem. Ice is a power problem. A quarter inch of glaze on lines and limbs takes the grid down across whole counties, and the rural lines around Brighton, Atoka, Munford and Covington are restored last. That is when a house gets dangerous: no heat, and in a few hours the pipes on exterior walls and in the crawlspace start to freeze. A well pump with no power means no water, which turns a cold night into a real emergency for the family and the animals. Refrigerated medicine, oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines — none of it cares that the storm was pretty.

The prep that costs nothing

Find your main water shut-off now and turn it once so you know it moves. Disconnect garden hoses and cover the spigots. When a hard freeze is actually in the forecast: drip the faucets farthest from the meter, open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls, close the crawlspace vents, and keep the thermostat at 55 or above even if you leave. If a pipe does let go, that shut-off valve is the difference between a plumbing bill and a flooring bill. Our frozen-pipe guide has the full checklist.

Why a portable generator is not the plan most people think it is

A portable will run a space heater and the refrigerator — if someone goes outside in the ice every few hours with a gas can, runs cords through a cracked door, and never, ever lets it near the garage. It will not run a furnace blower, a well pump and the kitchen at the same time, and it will not do anything at all if nobody is home when the power drops.

What a whole-home standby generator does instead

A Generac standby unit sits outside like an AC condenser, runs on your natural gas or propane, and watches the utility line around the clock. When the power drops it starts itself and restores the house in seconds: heat, lights, well pump, refrigerator, the medical equipment. When the lines come back it hands off and shuts down. It also runs a short self-test every week so you find out about a problem on a Tuesday afternoon, not during the storm.

Why the install books out before the storm, not after

Last winter we were setting Generac units right up until the ice arrived, and we heard from a lot of families who wanted the same protection and simply ran out of time. The reason is not drama — it is the calendar. A proper install is a sizing visit, a permit, licensed gas piping, a pad, the transfer switch and a commissioning, and the moment an ice storm is in the ten-day forecast every homeowner in three counties calls at once. The quiet weeks are the fast weeks.

What it costs, honestly

The price depends on the size of the unit (whole home with air conditioning, or essentials like heat, well, kitchen and lights), the fuel — natural gas or a propane tank — how far the gas and electrical runs are, and the transfer switch. We size from the loads in your actual house, not from a brochure, and quote the full installed price before anything is ordered. The sizing visit is free and carries no obligation, and financing is available if you would rather spread it out. We are a Generac authorized dealer for both installation and service, so the crew that sets it is the crew that maintains it.

The bottom line

You cannot control what the forecast does in January. You can control whether the house is ready for it in October. If a standby generator has been on your list, this is the season to start the conversation — call or text (901) 699-7763, or request the free estimate online and we will call you back to set a time.
